G. Stephany

G. Stephany or Stephani is considered one of the most important ivory carvers in Europe.

Stephany was a pupil of the Hess brothers and worked mainly in London and Bath. From 1791 Stephany exhibited his work at the Royal Accademy of Arts and at No 33 Old Bond Street, Corner of Stafford street in London.

The illustration shows an obolonge box with the important depiction of the naval battle of Abukir on 25.07.1799 off Alexandria in Egypt. This naval battle and the battle off Trafalgar against Napoleon Bonaparte are among the most important naval battles of the British Empire. The obolong box is made of ivory and the carving is finished off with a lidded glass of the same colour with gold edging.
